BLOODROOT PASTE & SARCOIDOSIS

What is Sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis is a disease complex found in several mammalian species. Specifically, equine sarcoids are the most common of tumor growths reported in horses. Sarcoids are non-malignant; they typically do not spread throughout the body, yet frequently grow larger and multiply locally. They can occur as single or multiple lesions in different forms; ranging from small, wart-like lesions to large, ulcerated and fibrous growths.

What causes Sarcoidosis?

There has yet to be a clear, exact cause of sarcoids, but it is widely believed (based upon strong evidence) that they are initiated by viral infection, such as BPV (Bovine Papilloma Virus). This would be transmitted by flies or other biting insects.

Where do Sarcoids appear?

Sarcoids most commonly appear on a horse’s abdominal area, sheath, legs, ears, muzzle area and/or around their eyes.

How many types of Sarcoids are there?

There are six (6) distinct clinical ‘types’, including: Occult, Verrucose, Nodular, Fibroblastic, Malevolent (quite rare) and Mixed (a combination of the other five types).

What animals does it effect?

Sarcoidosis generally effect the genus Equus (mammals in the family Equidae), commonly referring to: Horses, Donkeys, Zebras, Mules and Ponies. Related tumors and growths have been found in other livestock, such as some species of large bovine and large canine.

What effect do Sarcoids have on my horse?

Sarcoids can cause irritation, interference with tack (hemorrhage) and loss of value to the affected horse. If knocked or rubbed, the surface of the growth and flesh will bleed. “Fly worry” and local infections are common results.
